Contemporary British Painting Prize 2019

Artist Joanna Whittle was the prizewinner of the 2019 CBP Prize, receiving £2000, an essay written about her painting practice by Griselda Pollock, membership to Contemporary British Painting and to be one of the selectors for the 2020 CBP Prize.

Adam Hennessey was awarded ‘Highly Commended’.

The 12 shortlisted finalists for the 2019 Contemporary British Painting Prize 2019 were:
Louise Bristow, Stephanie Douet, Kirsty Harris, Helen Hayward, Adam Hennessey, Juliette Losq, Scott McCracken, Jo McGonigal, Ruth Murray, Diana Taylor, Joanna Whittle and Maddie Yuille.

The winner was announced on Saturday 9 November at Huddersfield Art Gallery, followed by a ‘Walk & talk’ event led by Judith Tucker on Saturday 7 December. The exhibition then toured to ASC Gallery in London.

The prize judges for 2019 were Graham Crowley (Painter, writer and Professor of Painting at the Royal College of Art 1998 – 2006), Griselda Pollock (Professor of Social and Critical Histories of Art at the University of Leeds) and Grant Scanlan (Huddersfield Museums Manager)

The twelve shortlisted artists were selected by four painters: Lisa Denyer, Geraint Evans, Joe Packer (winner of the Contemporary British Painting Prize 2018) and Judith Tucker.
