Cathy Lomax

Cathy Lomax is a London based artist. On completing a MA in Fine Art at Central St Martins in 2002 she set up Transition Gallery in East London. She also edits two art and culture magazines, Arty and Garageland. In 2016 Lomax started a PhD at Queen Mary University of London, researching the role of makeup in the creation of the female star image. Her artwork assimilates the seductive imagery of film, fame and fashion and juxtaposes it with personal narratives and the everyday. The resulting paintings and installations play with history by combining influences from disparate sources to form new groupings and categories.

Lomax won the Contemporary British Painting Prize in 2016, was an Abbey Painting Fellow at the British School at Rome in 2014 and was shortlisted for the East London Painting Prize in 2015 and 2014. Solo exhibitions include American Tan, Dolph, London SW2 (2015). Recent group exhibitions include Sampler (curated by Kristian Day), Arcade, London (2016); Blakes Outsiders, Worthing Museum, West Sussex (2016); Contemporary British Drawing, Xi’an Academy of Fine Arts, China (2015); Heads, Yellow, Varese, Italy (2015); British Low Culture, Honey Ramka, Brooklyn, USA (2014); Stowaway, Weekend Gallery, LA, USA (2014) and Misdirect Movies, Royal Standard Liverpool (2013).
